I have a very scent-sensitive family and I've been searching for a good project paint. Both my stair spindles and front door are golden oak and will require sanding (or so I had thought). The stair spindles I had planned on painting white all along and I don't care if they are matte or glossy. This paint is matte and I'll give it a try. I'm hopeful that it really is self leveling and hides the oak grainlines. I'll paint it on 3 scrap piece of wood first- I posted a picture of them. One is a previously dark stained oak, one is a piece of unpainted wood and the 3rd is old varnished golden hardwood of unknown species. If this paint really is all that it claims, I'll be the first in line to buy this for all my future painting needs.
Update: see my 3rd pic. After 2 coats on my sample pieces I didn't see the coverage I wanted and it didn't look as smooth as I thought it should. I applied a 3rd coat of paint and was a bit more liberal with the amount I used. This time it came out smooth and the coverage I needed.
I'll wait a while for it to totally cure and see how strong the finish is adhered. Usually sanding and priming prepares the surface to hold the paint. Since this paint says you can skip that- we'll see how things go. It works great as a table piece in our home. The quality really stands out.
