In my aquariums, I use Eco-Complete for my substrate and then a 1-2" cap of this. I love how it looks and it is so helpful in holding stem plants until they have a chance to root. Easy to work with and only needs a minimum of rinsing. It is a true black with just a little sheen to it. Very pleasing. Love, love, love it!!! It fits well with our furniture setup. Assembly was straightforward.
