It works great as a table piece in our home. Very happy with the purchase overall.
When I bought this a few weeks ago, it was a slightly different product, though Amazon confirms, "You purchased this item on October 11, 2015". At that time, it was only a single-speed fan with a rocker-style on/off switch. The new multi-speed switch looks nice, though I'm fine with single-speed. Other than that, the specs are identical, so I assume the fan itself is the same.
Anyway, I love this fan. It is super quiet, which was one of my main requirements. I am an electronics developer, and needed something to cool a prototype processor board. The prototype sits about 2ft from me on a workbench in my lab, so I really wanted something quiet. As for cooling, my measurements on a temperature-sensitive component dropped from 120degF/49degC (without a fan) down to 72degF/22degC (with this fan).
The fan is powered by USB, but it also includes a USB charger / power supply, so it can be wall-powered as well. In my case, I simply plugged it into my prototype's USB port, so the fan only comes on when my prototype is running, which is great. I assume most home entertainment systems and game systems work the same way, only powering their USB ports when the system is turned on.
Keep in mind... if you want to connect several fans together (because it does include a pass-through connector for more fans), you might need to use the included power adapter (which is just a USB wall charger), instead of powering multiple fans via the USB ports on your AV or Game system. The power adapter provides 2x more power than a standard USB port.
The fan has rubber grommets on both sides, and in all 4 corners, to reduce vibration noise. They stick out enough past the edges that you can stand the fan on its side, or lay it flat, without causing vibration noise.
If you plan to place the fan on or against a flat surface, you might want a little more space than the grommets alone provide. It depends whether the surface you place it against has enough holes for this fan's airflow. The manufacturer also has a similar fan with screws that can act as spacers if you think that might be more useful in your situation. In my case, the fan was fine as-is. It works great as a table piece in our home.
